네이버웹툰이 최근 여성 혐오 논란에 휩싸이며 독자들의 강한 반발을 사고 있다.

이로 인해 회원 탈퇴 및 환불 요구가 잇따르고 있으며, 온라인에서는 불매 운동이 확산되고 있다. 이러한 상황에 대응하기 위해 네이버웹툰은 대책 마련에 나섰다.

이번 논란은 '2024 지상최대공모전'에서 출품된 '이세계 퐁퐁남'이라는 아마추어 웹툰이 1차 심사를 통과하면서 시작됐다. 해당 웹툰은 주인공이 아내의 불륜을 목격한 후 재산을 잃고 이혼하게 되는 내용을 다루고 있다.

논란의 핵심은 제목에 포함된 '퐁퐁남'이라는 용어다. 이 단어는 연애 경험이 많은 여성과 결혼한 남성을 비하하는 신조어로, 특히 여성 혐오적 뉘앙스를 담고 있어 비판을 받고 있다. 이는 여성과의 과거 연애 경험이 많은 경우, 그 남성이 마치 다른 이가 먹었던 음식을 처리하는 것처럼 비유되는 '설거지론'과 연결되며, 이러한 개념은 여성 혐오적인 시각에서 비롯된 표현으로 해석된다.

논란이 확산되던 중 네이버웹툰은 웹툰 '소꿉친구 컴플렉스'를 홍보하면서 "불매합니다"라는 밈을 사용해 다시 한 번 비난의 대상이 되었다. 이 문구는 불매 운동을 조롱하는 것이라는 해석을 불러일으켰고, 네이버웹툰은 해당 마케팅 콘텐츠가 불매 운동 이전에 제작된 것이라고 해명하며 사과문을 게시했다. 그러나 불매 운동은 더욱 커지고 있으며, 네이버웹툰의 일간활성이용자(DAU) 수는 약 10% 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 네이버웹툰 측은 해당 작품의 비공개 전환에 대해 어려움을 표명했다.

표현의 자유와 심사 과정의 공정성을 고려해야 한다는 이유에서다.

그러나 업계 전문가들은 독자 반응이 중요한 평가 요소로 작용할 2차 심사에서 '이세계 퐁퐁남'이 통과하기는 어려울 것이라고 전망하고 있다.

Naver Webtoon Faces Backlash Over Alleged Misogynistic Content, Sparking Boycott Movement

Naver Webtoon is facing strong backlash after accusations of allowing misogynistic content to proliferate on its platform, resulting in a surge of membership cancellations and refund requests. The controversy has fueled an ongoing boycott movement, primarily online, as the company scrambles to address the situation.

The issue arose when an amateur webtoon titled  "a term mocking naive men who marry women with significant pasts" ("이 세계 퐁퐁남")* passed the first round of Naver Webtoon’s *2024 Grand Competition*. The story follows a man who witnesses his wife’s affair, loses his wealth in a divorce, and transitions to another world. The controversy centers on the term "퐁퐁남" in the title, a derogatory slang term that mocks men who marry women with significant romantic or sexual pasts, implying they are naïve and have been taken advantage of. The phrase is tied to the broader concept of "dishwashing theory," which compares such men to someone cleaning the dishes after others have already eaten. This notion is seen as rooted in misogynistic ideas, leading to significant criticism, particularly from female readers.

As the controversy gained traction, Naver Webtoon found itself in further trouble due to a marketing campaign for another series, *"Childhood Friend Complex."* The promotion used the meme “We’re boycotting,” which many interpreted as mocking the ongoing boycott movement. The backlash was immediate, with critics accusing the company of trivializing the concerns of its users. 

In response, Naver Webtoon issued a public apology, explaining that the marketing content had been created before the boycott movement gained momentum and was inadvertently re-published due to an operational error. Despite the apology, the company’s daily active users (DAU) reportedly dropped by about 10%, according to mobile data analysis.

However, Naver Webtoon has expressed reluctance to take the controversial webtoon offline, citing concerns over freedom of expression and the fairness of the competition's judging process. Industry experts, however, suggest that it is unlikely *"이 세계 퐁퐁남"* will pass the second round of the competition, which takes into account reader feedback as part of the evaluation criteria. The final results are expected to be announced on November 22. 

Despite the company's efforts to manage the crisis, the controversy shows no signs of abating, and Naver Webtoon faces a difficult road ahead as it navigates user trust and content moderation issues.
